MARITIME BIOFUELS

In 2019, shipping represented around 3% of all EU greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and 13% of the transport sector emissions in Europe.

Maritime Methanol is a low-cost, renewable fuel and energy source coming from biomass and this represents a realistic sustainable alternative to advance the decarbonisation of the maritime sector. Fuel EU Maritime Regulations will further encourage industry players to shift to renewable and low-carbon fuels.

At Sylvionltd we are progressing at pace with production of a Biomass based Green Methanol fuel suitable for Marine applications. Our sister company Creel Maritime Ltd provides us with a daily ‘working insight’ into the requirements and demands of the shipping sector.

Based on Biomass gasification and proven technology: Biomass (e.g. roundwood, wood chips, agric residues, municipal waste) is superheated and converted into syn gas (a mixture of hydrogen / carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide) in a gasification process. This syn gas can then be synthesised and processed to methanol.

We are working with a focused consortium of partners on this and are 100% taking a hands on approach in real time (not desk based) to make this happen. If words were pound notes we would all be millionaires, but actions are what will put food on the table.

We are of course potentially starting small, so we will need to scale up for Marine volumes and use.

Sylvion Ltd is working on a dynamic business model whereby in agreement with port / landowner (and subject to power supply / biomass supply chain and bunker space being facilitated) we will supply and operate a production facility on the basis of a localised price per litre (ppl) for offtakers.
